Fishing in Lakes and Ponds

If you’re a new fisherman, lakes and ponds are a good place to start. They produce abundant plant foods and offer sufficient coverage for fish. Structures such as docks, logs, stumps, grass and rocks along provide shelter, shade and protection for fish. All this means that Lakes and lagoons offer some of the best fishing spots.

You can fish in lakes and lagoons from the shore or from a boat. Here are some of the best places to find fish:

• Rocks: rocks are often some of the best fishing spots. They provide fish refuge (coverage), food and a possible place to mate. Remember, always fishing near structures. If the rocks are found in deeper waters or on the edge of deeper waters, they provide an even better place for fishing in lakes and ponds. Just be careful not to entangle the bait.

• Fishing along points with lines of rupture: a point extends out from the coast and sloping gradually down and into deeper waters. This is a good place to fish. But a point with a quick drop or one that does not extend to deeper waters, is not a good fishing spot.

• Grass beds: grass beds are structures. They provide food and shelter to the FRY that attract sport fishing fishes. Search for beds of grass that are close to deeper waters and making a line break. Or search in grass bed submerged in deep, open water.

• Islands and sand banks: these sunken or partially submerged bodies of Earth attract both the FRY and fish from fishing if they create a line break, where the Earth tilts gradually down and into deeper waters. Water currents also flow around the Islands, and carry small plant foods and aquatic animals that float on the surface. That can also attract the minnows and fish for sport fishing.

• Fishing in lakes and ponds: pools are glacial basins that are lower than the rest of the Lake. The water is cooler and attracts deep-sea fish in the hot days of summer. You will need a topographical map to find them.

Sunken objects: trees, branches, logs, stumps and rocks are considered structures. All of them provide shelter, shade and protection for fish. So it is a good place to fish. Always watch your line and be very careful if you’re on a boat to avoid hitting other objects.

• Lilies: insects and other aquatic creatures that live in and around the lilies always attract smaller fish, and the fish always attract bigger fish. Large Lily-leaf patches can also create shadow, which in turn attracts the fish. Strip your line to the edges and openings. Otherwise, you can tangle your team.

• Piers and piles: wherever you have structure there are food, shelter, and fish. Grass, barnacles and other food sources can attach to anything. Docks and piers provide protection from the Sun and a pleasant resting place for large and small fish.
