Guide to Buying Your Smart Watch / Smartwatch

If you are thinking of buying a Smartwatch watch, you must take into account some data before making the decision.

If you are hesitating because you think it may be a fad, or it is a device too “geek”, data indicate that in the year 2015 have sold 17.1 million wearable devices. Are you going to be the last to have your device wearable?

When deciding to buy an electronic device (tablet, smartphone, Smartwatch watch , etc), we always take into account subjective factors(brand experience, opinions, tastes, …), and other objective factors . With this guide we want to make the decision to buy a smartwatch easier, for this we analyze some of the objective factors that can influence when making your decision to buy.

These are the most important factors you should keep in mind when choosing your Smartwatch watch.  In addition you must add your subjective factors that motivate you to make a purchase. You can be a loyal user of Samsung or Apple, and move around the mark when it comes to choosing your smart watch. In this case a Samsung Gear S2 or an Apple Watch, respectively.

Compatibility, Operating System And Connectivity.

The Smartwatches are mostly phone accessories and can thus make more functionality if you have connected to them. You have to know that not all smart watches are compatible with your smartphone. This compatibility we could divide it into the two most important operating systems, next to Windows phone, so we can find intelligent clocks:

Android Wear.

WatchOS  (Apple Watch).

Compatible with different iOS/Android Operating Systems(Chinese Watches or Alcatel One Touch Watch ).

Watches with Android (Smartwatch with different versions of Android).

Other operating systems. (Ex: The Samsung watches that most carry SO Tizen and are compatible only with the Smarphones Samsung, or the smartwatches of Pebble).

This leads us to see that if you have an iphone as a phone, it does not make much sense to buy a Smartwatch that is not compatible with iOS. The same in case you have an Android Smartphone.

Before buying your watch, you must take into account the version of iOS and/or Android that supports the watch. Since if your Smartwatch, in an example, is compatible with Android 4.3 and above, and your phone has Android 4.0 OS, your smartwatch will not be compatible with your phone.

This compatibility is necessary because many of the features of your Smartwatch watch will be linked to your phone, such as receiving various notifications. There are also smartwatches like various Chinese watches (uwatch U11), which are completely independent, and can work without being connected to a Smartphone.

The connection of our smart clock with the phone will be made via Bluetooth, NFC , Wi-fi, etc. We will have to check if our smartphone supports the Smartwatch connection type. If our watch is connected via Bluetooth 4.0, and our phone has Bluetooth 2.0, the connection may not be made.

In short, we have to take our smartphone very carefully when buying a smartwatch, since many of its functionalities in most cases will depend on the link with it.

Functionality

This aspect is essential, and we should spend some time before making the purchase of the smart watch, or any wearable. We should ask the following questions before making the purchase:

Why do I need smartwatch?

When will I use it? (Performing sport, all day, just walking, …).

What independence of my smartphone do I want to have with the smart watch?

[Important] What use will I give to my Smartwatch?

Here are some of the questions we must answer before going on the search for such devices. Since depending on the needs we should opt for one or another smart watch.

Here’s a summary of some of the features you can find on a smart watch:

For Sportsmen:

We can find watches focused on athletes among them the Watches with GPS . Others are smart clocks with some complementary features to monitor our physical activity.

Within the characteristics or functionalities for our physical activity: Meter of steps, calorie meter, Distance meter (with or without GPS), Pulse meter(with more or less precision), applications to monitor our physical activity , etc.

There are devices specifically designed for athletes such as the Moto 360 Sport, Samsung Gear S2 Spor t, or Fitbit wristbands .

And also smartwatch models that we can acquire that have some functionalities for our sporting activity like:  Sony Smartwatch 3 (GPS, Bluetooth headset), Alcatel One Touch Watch (pedometer, heart rate monitor), or more basic like the Smartwatch U8 (with pedometer).

Notifications And Answer Calls:

Getting notifications on our smart watch is something general in almost every model on the market. The difference in most cases is how we can receive these notifications and whether or not we have the possibility to respond. Most smartwatch allows you to synchronize with applications such as Whats App, Twitter, Facebook, Gmail , etc.

In models like the Smartwatch U8 we receive all kinds of notifications, but we do not have the possibility to answer them. In other models we will respond by voice (Google now!), Or even be able to write as if it were a phone ( Samsung Gear S, Aplus Watch, Zgpax PW6) .

If you just want to receive notifications on your watch you can also find a model, which with its small LED display you can receive all kinds of configurable notifications. This smartwatch is the Martian Notifier digital watch  from which we have performed an analysis.

Being able to use your smart clock to make or receive calls, although it is a function that makes you independent of your phone, is not implemented in many models. The clock must have a speaker and microphone so we can receive and send calls. In this case the Chinese watches were ahead of the big manufacturers, and models like the Smartwatch U11 (in addition the U11 without having connection with the phone),  or the  A plus Watch allow to make calls.

Independence With Your Phone:

This functionality, again, has been a breakthrough in Chinese smartwatch. For example, the  Zgpax PW6-B  or U11 with an adapter, allows us a total independence with our phone, since you can incorporate a SIM card.

With this type of clocks we can be totally independent of our phone, since we can answer calls, notifications, etc, from the same. In some of them, we will also have the possibility of connecting via Wifi to different networks to download data. Some models have a 3G connection.

Other Smartwatches Features:

We must keep in mind that in the case of Android watches or with Android Wear , the possibilities are endless, as many applications we can install.Taking into account also the different sensors that have our device.

We can make our smart watch become a mini console to play, or in a music player, take pictures, or take photos on our phone by remote control…

You can also find other functionalities related to wellness and health such as a sleep monitor, which control your sleep time and quality(great functionality in the  Xiaomi Mi Band ). Most smartwatches have built-in pedometers, and calorie counters.

Each new device in the market is more complete and with more functionalities than the previous one. That is why it is advisable to update our device if we want to be at the latest regarding advances and applications.

Another aspect to keep in mind is that these features can be seen “limited” by the characteristics of our mobile phone. For example, we advise you to read this article on different smartphones for your smartwatch.

Technical Features, Design And Display

When it comes to buying any item it is essential that we enter through the eyes. But in a technological device such as a smartwatch or a smart bracelet, we also have to take into account technical aspects that influence its performance and functionality. Finally, the screen is another differential factor; We have screens of different sizes, tactile, color or monochrome, etc.

Technical Characteristics

Within the technical characteristics to choose your smartwatch we want to differentiate two aspects. On the one hand, its performance capacity (Ram, Internal Memory, Processor), and on the other hand the sensors (gyroscope, NTC, Wi-fi, etc.) that have built-in.

It seems that the big brands have standardized the performance characteristics of their devices. Motorola, Samsung or Huawei have agreed to offer us the same memory specifications in their latest models (512 MB Ram and 4GB Rom). Regarding the speed of processors, these models are also almost on par, perhaps the Moto 360 2 generation  has a little advantage with the Snapdragon 400. In general, in the high-end devices we will have a very similar performance in speed of processors.

Sensors are another important aspect of choosing and buying your smart watch;  And is that depending on the sensors built into the clock, it can perform different functions.

Most smartwatch will connect to your phone via blue tooth, but you can find devices with NTC, or also Wi-fi. Currently some Chinese watches allow you to incorporate SIM cards (to make calls) and other 3G.

Clock Design

The choice of a watch by its design is something subjective, we may like a classic smart watch, or one with a more sporty style (about taste colors). It is clear that without being a relevant aspect in the operation of smartwatch, design is one of the most important conditioning factors of purchase.

In recent months we are finding smart watches that are looking for new markets, specifically the female user. Manufacturers looking for these buyers not only differentiate their articles with the different belts, but are bringing to the market models with smaller crowns. Examples can be found in the smart bracelet adapted to the female gender like Gear Fit Tous, or Cupertino with the pink gold version of Apple Watch.

With Android Wear, the design of our watch constantly varies this is due to the possibility of changing spheres. As an example, the Huawei Watch in which we see how we can choose different Watch face that change the design of our watch with a single click.

The materials also have an important fault that our smart watch has a nice design. The finishes of brands like Huawei or Motorola, as well as steel versions like Pebble Steel or Sony Smartwatch 3 make our watch look stylishly on our wrist.

The belt: Manufacturers have been agile reacting to the need to adapt each watch to a user. One of the fastest ways to customize our device is by using the strap. The vast majority of smartwatch and smart bracelets give you the ability to swap the straps with great ease.

Dimensions and weight: In this factor occurs as with the straps, manufacturers have decided to customize as much as possible the watches. Therefore, e n the big brands watches usually have two or even three versions with different sizes. Weight is also a factor, there are some watches of greater weight than others, but they are not so heavy that in a matter of days they go unnoticed in your wrist. Among the more volume smartwatches include the Pebble Time and Samsung Gear S.
