Introduction to Aligarh University

According to abbreviationfinder, Aligarh University is commonly known as AU. Aligarh Muslim University was established in 1875 by the great social reformer, Sir Syed Ahmad Khan. The university was initially known as the Muhammadan Anglo Oriental College and was established to promote education among Muslims of British India. The college started with five students and gradually grew in size and stature. In 1920, the college was granted university status and renamed as Aligarh Muslim University.

The university has since then played an important role in the development of Indian society and politics during the post-colonial period. It has produced some of India’s most influential political leaders such as Jawaharlal Nehru, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, Zakir Hussain and many more. Degrees Offered and Departments

Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) offers a wide range of departments and degrees to its students. The university has seven faculties that offer undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral courses in the fields of Arts, Science, Medicine, Engineering & Technology, Law, Life Sciences and Management Studies.

The Faculty of Arts offers courses in the Humanities such as History, Political Science & International Relations, Sociology & Social Work, Islamic Studies & Culture and Languages. It also provides an array of interdisciplinary courses such as Environmental Studies and Women’s Studies. The Faculty of Science offers degrees in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics & Statistics and Biotechnology. The Faculty of Medicine provides MBBS degree along with Postgraduate programs in various specialties like Pediatrics and Obstetrics & Gynecology. The Faculty of Engineering & Technology provides courses like Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering among others. The Faculty of Law offers Bachelors in Law (LLB) as well as Masters in Laws (LLM). The Faculty of Life Sciences provides degrees in Botany, Zoology and Biochemistry among other disciplines. Lastly the Faculty of Management Studies offers Bachelors Degree programs such as BBA (Hons.), BMS (Hons.) and MBA (Full Time). All these departments offer students a wide range to choose from for their higher studies at AMU.


Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) is one of the top universities in India. It was ranked at 35th position by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) in 2020. It is also recognised as an Institute of Eminence by the Government of India. Admissions Requirements

Aligarh University has a wide variety of admissions requirements and procedures for admission, depending on the type of program the student is applying to. All applicants must meet the minimum eligibility criteria and submit the requisite documents, as specified by the university. For undergraduate programs, applicants must have completed their 10+2 with a minimum aggregate score of 50% from a recognized board. In some cases, additional entrance exams may be required. For postgraduate programs, applicants must have a bachelor’s degree in relevant fields with at least 55% marks or equivalent CGPA. Entrance exams are conducted for some postgraduate courses as well.

International students are required to fulfill all the same requirements mentioned above and also demonstrate proficiency in English language via IELTS or TOEFL scores. Additionally, they will need to provide valid documents that prove their identity and other relevant information such as transcripts from previous institutions attended and letters of recommendation from faculty members or employers. Moreover, international students need to submit proof of financial support for living expenses during their stay in Aligarh University. In some cases, an interview may be conducted for admission into certain courses if deemed necessary by the Admission Committee.
