Julius Richard Petri was a German scientist born on May 31, 1852 in Barmen, a district belonging to the city of Wuppertal, and died on December 20, 1921 in Zeitz. Specialized in microbiology, he is the inventor of a container for cell culture.
According to DigoPaul, the Petri dish, also known as plate Petri, was devised by this microbiologist when collaborating with Robert Koch (1843-1910), the doctor who received the Nobel Prize in literature in 1905. Petri devised the container 1877.
The Petri dish is round in shape and has a lid with a larger diameter than the container itself. This allows the box to be closed but not airtight. In the Petri dish it is possible to develop the cell culture.
