Meizu MX5: the Review

And finally we are ready with our review of the Meizu MX5Smartphones that we showed you directly at the launch in Beijing but we wanted to try more calmly because of software problems and bugs which forced us to do a reset and start again the test hoping for an improvement that unfortunately there was. We discover together what we weren’t convinced of MX5 and which ones have the potential.

Hardware, Materials and ergonomics:

Meizu MX5 is based on the latest MediaTek MT6795 architecture that is characterized by an ARM Cortex Octa Core 64-bit-A53. This is a very powerful CPU with a clock that comes to ben 2.26 GHz. Furthermore we find a PowerVR G6200 arriving at a clock speed of 700 MHz. In addition there are 3 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal memory that unfortunately are not expandable although there are versions of 32 and 64 gigs of this smartphone (hopefully arrive in Europe).

A business card so really interesting especially if we look at the price of 349 € Italian official.Great then even the camera from 20.7 megapixels combined with a 5 megapixel front.

  • Size: 74.7 x 7.6 x 149.9 mm
  • Weight: 149 g
  • SoC: MediaTek Helio X 10 (MT6795)
  • Processor: ARM Cortex-A53, 2200 MHz Octa Core
  • GPU: PowerVR G6200, 700 MHz
  • RAM: 3 GB, 933 MHz
  • Internal memory: 16 GB, 32 GB, 64 GB
  • Display: 5.5 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixel, AMOLED
  • Battery: 3150 mAh
  • Operating system: Flyme 4.5 (Android 5.0 Lollipop)
  • Camera: 3840 x 2160 5248 x 3696 pixel, pixels, 30 fps
  • SIM Card: Nano-SIM
  • Wi-Fi: a, b, g, n, n 5 GHz, Dual band Wi-Fi Hotspot, Wi-Fi Direct
  • USB: 2.0, Micro USB
  • Bluetooth: 4.1
  • Navigation: GPS, A-GPS, GLONASS

Excellent also the materials through the adoption of metal throughout the body, even in the back of your smartphone. In hand, despite the generous size, it holds well thanks to lateral curve but tends to slip a bit since the grip is not very high. Smart gesture and middle button with fingerprint reader and phone activation make it really nice to use MX5.

Display:

Very nice display with a 5.5 inch diagonal provides a huge area of use. The technology is Super Amoled and so we have perfect black, total viewing angles and there are no problems with polarized either vertically or horizontally. Unfortunately it is not the Amoled of Samsung and although there are settings to modify the colors, we have imperfect and white some colors a bit too strong. Remains an excellent display when compared to competitors on the same price range.

As anticipated but what makes the difference are the gesture. Especially the middle button can be pressed to return to the home or activate the phone and incorporates a fingerprint reader really fast and accurate, probably the best on Android right now. Also the middle button can be clicked to quickly go back one step in any screen or return to the home if it is pressed completely. Finally you can make the Panel the active multitasking on the fly with a swype from bottom to top. These and other gesture can be set directly from the menu, and are combined with great touch & feel and precise light sensor and well calibrated.

Drums, Audio and reception:

Thanks to 3150mAh the battery capacity has allowed us to get through the day without real sacrifices. We did not record autonomy despite a positive amperage but is a product still balanced. There are software optimizations that allow us to overcome the dinner with heavy use but are placed in an application that combines several possibilities and not found in the General settings.

Let’s remember that we’re talking about a full 4 g Dual SIM and device and therefore from the point of view of connectivity. Good Dual SIm options with hot-switch SIM but less interesting features than traditional Mediatek. However, you cannot use a space SIM as memory expansion (a shame). Unfortunately we noticed an abnormal warming in daily use, especially in the presence of poor signal which also affects a significant autonomy (not necessarily due to the presence of 4 g).

For receiving and audio instead good feedback and no real problem although there are two notes to do:

  • In software volume management, silent and vibration is cumbersome and unintuitive since it forces you to use the toggle notifications and not the volume rocker that, in any menu, handling the media part only
  • The difference in volume between the latest notch in call and the second is too high
  • The sound lacks bass and a bit too tinny

All “flaws” that could be corrected the software side although some choices took them from Meizu. Shame about the lack of the 800 MHz band and the NFC.

Software:

Meizu MX5 is based on Android Lollipop 5.0.1, a distribution that probably will be updated soon because other Meizu have newer software. Our model from the presentation, you probably still in beta and this is probably the reason for the problems we had and that we list and some of which do not allow us to arrive at a positive smartphone.

We start with order. The UI is completely customized user interface but since it is the European version of firmware is fully translated. In everyday use the smartphone is fast, pleasant, intelligent in some customizations and with a home very clean and interesting graphically. The launcher has a dense grid and exploited the 5.5 inch but still Flyme OS is nice and obviously doesn’t have the applications menu as everything is in the home along with the Widget.

Not a bad browser owner to upload the pages even heavy and enables worthily of all content. Interesting then night mode to improve readability in low light conditions.

Otherwise the system is fluid, responsive and there are no “cinesate” being located for our market. However, there are some choices not particularly happy, like for example the splitting of the notifications, sound management and some solutions that are not perfect. It must be said, however, that implementing fingerprint reader software also allows you to have a private area for photos and videos and, using your Meizu, obtain the Root in an instant.

Unfortunately, we do not know if it depended on what’s new with Google services recently announced | Meizu: an end to support of Google services in China, purchased only international versions | We had many problems in the management of Google services, so much so that after a reset, we had to avoid turning off the smartphone in order to keep your Google account. We don’t know exactly how and why but after a certain period of use erases the data Google forcing us to do it all over again. A problem we hope depended on a transitional phase of Meizu and beta firmware.

Camera and Multimedia:

20.7 the Megapixels are available that allow you to have an excellent overall quality and above all a very simple interface, instant, without too many settings but with everything you need, including pro version with manual settings for focus. In short, everything is there and works well. Even in low-light conditions you have a very good result and the flash illuminates very well. Not bad even the front room from 5 megapixels.

Multimedia side behaves very well and also the speaker bottom is powerful and with a loud volume. Also good GPU which allows you to enjoy of the core problems and with a nice 5.5 inch display that offers a pleasant view of our game Unfortunately no video playback 2 k but a software anyway well done. Nice music player and good sound in the headphones.

Conclusions:

Meizu MX5 is a product that is undoubtedly great and which enhances the MX4 last year.Unfortunately, at least for the moment, it’s not all perfect and if the battery door at night but not surprisingly, and despite the price is very good in relation to the characteristics, the problems listed make the experience less enjoyable than it potentially could be. Some choices are highly intelligent, others less so and the deletion of your Google account, the splitting of notifications and also some chromatic choices which make little readable some writing (see notifications but not only) are certainly to be reviewed … hoping they are magazines.

Meizu MX5 is available online from Amazon Marketplace at 268 euros. Good value for money and is one of the best devices in this price range.
